Online, Internet, or Search Marketing?

What IS in a name?

My surname, for instance, means either 'mighty as a boar' if it's from Saxon Germany, or 'native of Evreux' in what is now northern France, if it's Norman.

My wife Jacqui's surname is French-speaking Swiss, via Jersey. I'm still amazed at the series of coincidences that brought us both to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

Anyway, I recently posed a question on Facebook:

'If you promote your business on the web, which do you use - online marketing, Internet marketing or search engine marketing?'

What I was trying to get at was not so much, 'Which do you use' as, 'What do you call it?' because the three terms are to most people virtually interchangeable. What I really wanted was a clue as to what search term I should optimise a website for.

But the people who answered tended to choose one type over the others, so I had to re-think.

Now, I still think 'online marketing' is interchangeable with 'Internet marketing', but they both cover a wide range of marketing strategies that happen to employ Internet-based technology. Emails, for example, or direct mail sending people to an otherwise obscure website.

For instance, Andrew Reynolds doesn't bother too much about optimising his sales pages for the search engines because he knows he can rely on exceptionally good direct mail to send visitors to them.

So if you're not on Mr Reynold's list, you might not ever stumble across one of his promotions in time to take advantage of it.

Whereas what we specialise in, under the broad title of 'online marketing' is in fact search engine marketing, or even just 'search marketing'. We get our clients' websites higher in the search results and we add a few more useful listings as well, so our clients don't so much show up on Google as invade it.

Much like the Saxons and Normans invaded England, actually. Maybe it's in the blood.

So that's what I've been doing with some of my time: invading Google and daydreaming around quotes from Shakespeare. How very English.

Online Marketing Beyond Bury St Edmunds

Just to show we're not limited to Bury St Edmunds, we've undertaken an online marketing exercise for a client in Littleport, Cambridgeshire.

Not a million miles away but a whole new set of keywords and a very different customer profile.

The latest beneficiary of our Internet marketing experience is The Utopia Centre, which specialises in footcare and weightloss for Cambridge and the surrounding area.

Why combine the two? Because foot and weight problems are often closely connected. And there's no better person to help you with both than Elizabeth Dutton who's a certificated weight loss coach and fully-qualified foot care professional.

The Utopia Centre also has a brand-new blog, courtesy of Cinnamon Edge (and Blogger.com), which also focuses on weightloss and footcare for the Cambridge area.

So, go to the Utopia Centre blog for latest news and to the Utopia Centre Website for in-depth information, and for a thoroughly professional service visit their beautiful oasis at Littleport, near Ely.

Online Marketing Project in Bury St Edmunds

One of the tactics you can use to get you onto page one of Google is an online news release, or several news releases.

We had great results for our marketing test using Pressbox, which offers a free service. It got us third place on page one with this item about the online marketing services we offer in Bury St Edmunds.

It's probably only slipped lower on the page because we took another eight places as well!

So think about using online news releases for marketing your business. It doesn't have to be earth-shattering news. If you're unsure about how to write a news release, we'll be happy to help.

Online Marketing in Bury St Edmunds

If you have a business in Bury St Edmunds or Suffolk, Cinnamon Edge has some good news.

In fact, it's probably good news, wherever you are, if your business could do with some marketing help, even though we've labelled our project 'Online marketing in Bury St Edmunds'.

That's because we're based in Bury St Edmunds, not because you have to be.

But the online marketing part, that's for anyone. The great thing about the Internet is that it's essentially free. Free to add your business to and free for customers to access.

So marketing online is a bargain, but that's just one advantage.

It's also amazingly powerful, because it can be very local AND because it can be global - whichever suits your business.

It's also always 'on' - meaning it's there whenever you choose to look, and whatever you want to look for. And you only find what you're looking for. If you search for an accountant in Bury St Edmunds, for example, you won't usually see an advert for used cars or information about stair lifts. So it's incredibly, almost perfectly, targeted.

That's why most people search online these days, including for local products and services.

Which means you could be found online at any time by exactly the people who want what you offer. And you won't waste a single penny trying to sell your stuff to anyone else.

So, if you have a business, almost any business, and you're not taking advantage of online marketing yet, can I ask why not?

Roy

PS. It's not too late to get online. In fact, it's the perfect time! We can even supply you with a FREE WEBSITE, just to get you online ASAP. Just visit the website at http://www.cinnamonedge.co.uk/ to find out more.

Find YOUR Niche

Hello again.

That's YOUR niche, not A niche. Because, if you are going to spend quite a lot of time and effort working in one fairly small subject area, you'll find it much easier if it's a subject you're actually 'into'.

Yes, it needs to be a niche that enough other people are into, and enough of those people have to be buyers.

But we can't all attack the golf niche, however profitable it looks. There's a lot of competition in the Internet marketing niche, so if you're getting into that you need to be good AND interested.

So that's why I've recently started a blog about cycling. Actually, about cycling and life.

Riding the coast to coast again this year has reminded me how much I enjoy long trips and big challenges. Commenting on a few cycling forums has reminded me how much I've learned and how useful my experiences can be for other people. I reckon I've been alive long enough to be able to talk about life, too.

And some of the lessons of cycling translate very well into my general thinking about life and living it as well.

So I'm talking about cycling, in my new blog 'Be Stronger Tomorrow'. I have other plans for that phrase, that I'll reveal in good time, but it comes from the literal truth that a hard ride today really does make you stronger tomorrow. Literally tomorrow.

Have a look and let me know what you think.

And meanwhile, think about your passions and how you could relate them to your business, if you're not already.

Introducing Roy's Rule...

...and Roy's Law, from which it is derived

Roy's Rule is this: if any change to your plan makes that plan more complicated, DON'T DO IT!

Why? Because Roy's Law states that:

Any change you make to a plan that complicates that plan means you move FURTHER AWAY from the intended end result instead of towards it.

Change is fine, but only if that change moves you closer to the result you're aiming for. Any other change you make is counter-productive, EVEN IF IT SEEMS LIKELY TO IMPROVE THE END RESULT.

Because in my experience the end result of a continually changing plan is that you never reach your end result.

Cinnamon Edge Moves (Temporarily...)

Due to unforseen circumstances (okay, we forgot), CinnamonEdge.com was allowed to lapse last week.

But, that little 'mishap' won't stop our online marketing, either in Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk, or for the rest of the world, for that matter...

Isn't it Ironic - Twitter Tactics

Well, it's slightly ironic, anyway, as long as you take Alanis Morissette's definition of irony...

... my one-hundredth post on this blog is about Twitter.

Anyway, there are probably a thousand Twitter tactics I don't know about yet, but I've just found the limitations of one tactic that a lot of new tweeters employ, which we might call 'follow you-follow me'.

This is where we build a list of followers by following other people with the tacit understanding that they'll follow us back. Most people will follow us back, and so our list of followers grows almost as quickly as we can click the 'follow' button on all those profiles.

The problem is with the 'most people will' bit, added to Twitter's rules that say you can't realistically follow more than 2000 people (actually 2001). Because there's a percentage of people who don't automatically (or manually) 'follow back', you will always have fewer followers than you do 'followees' (people you follow).

And the ratio between the two is just a bit too much to get you past the 2000 limit that Twitter sets. Using this tactic will get you around 1600 followers. My list stuck on around 1650 each time I reached the magic 2001 followees.

So, what's the solution?

Actually, it's easy and I'm going to prove it! Post more valuable tweets. In other words, build a following because of your contribution to Twitter World rather than by trying to use it solely for your own ends. Then people will follow you first, before you follow them, because you're worth following. Your posts will also get retweeted because they're worth passing on.

And you'll be popular for all the right reasons: people will actually like you!

That will probably be better for your business, too.

You're welcome to follow me, of course, whether you like me or not!

Taking Massive and Decisive Action

Hello again

Sixty-five years ago today, the allied forces undertook one of the most massive and decisive military actions of all time, when they invaded the beaches of Normandy to begin the re-possession of the European mainland.

What has that got to do with your life in 2009 and beyond?

Well, there's a lesson there if you care to take it: massive and decisive action usually means taking some kind of risk - investing a lot to get the result you need. When the pain of not taking action finally exceeds the pain of doing something; that's when most of us finally act.

That is, as Malcolm Gladwell would say, the 'Tipping Point'. Have you reached your tipping point yet?

Is the pain of not having enough money to see you through finally big enough to tip you into doing something about it?

Or at least thinking about what you can do?

If so, go here, to find out about the Secrets of Multiple Streams of Income from the brilliant (and multiple-wealthy) Ron G Holland.

And then take real action by saving yourself over 33% of the cost of changing your life.

There is absolutely no comparison with the 'investment' made by thousands of people sixty-five years ago.

But the rewards; freedom, security, seeing your loved ones relaxed and happy, are strangely similar.

Roy

PS. Ron Holland may well put the price up this weekend, so make it your mission to grab one of the remaining places at the discounted price, here. In the great scheme of things, it's no great sacrifice.

PPS. Ron Holland could be described as Britain's answer to Robert Allen. He has been described as 'spellbinding', 'the UK's top biz guru' and 'Britain's number one motivational speaker'.

You're lucky to have him on your side.

It's a bold claim, but that's how life works sometimes...

Because, whatever income you have at the moment, even if you have two incomes, it probably won't be enough to see you through. Shocking, but true.

But the secrets of multiple streams of income, and the lifestyle of your choice, could be yours on one life-changing day, 11 July 2009.

Ron G Holland wants to share those secrets with us.

I'll be there. Will you?

Multiple Streams of Income

One of the most important lessons many of us have learned in the last few years, and especially in the last few months, is not to rely on a single source of income.

However good that income source may be, when you bet your financial wellbeing on one stream alone you really are gambling with very dubious odds.

Even two sources are no guarantee - how long could you survive if your household income was cut in half?

Don't worry; here's how to create multiple streams of income, secure your future and give yourself and your loved ones the lifestyle you and they can currently only dream of:

Ron G Holland's Multiple Streams of Income Intensive Workshop

Ron has been described as 'Britain's top business guru', 'Britain's leading motivational speaker', and '...incredible. Possibly the very greatest business and self development guru in Britain.'

So we're very proud (though not surprised...) that he's asked us to help him with his Multiple Streams of Income Intensive Workshop.

The workshop is at London Heathrow on 13th June. There will be just 35 places available, so you need to go to the sign up page now.

Roy

PS. Of course, there are bonuses. Not the least of which is MENTORING by Ron Holland himself for a full twelve months after the workshop. That alone is worth over ten thousand pounds!

PPS. And there really are just 35 places!

Go HERE to reserve your seat at London Heathrow on 13th June.

A Lesson in Email Marketing

Actually, this lesson applies to any advertising and selling you do, through whatever medium.

It's just that it's so easy to measure it with email marketing (and so inexpensive, not to say effective...)

Anyway, we had a reminder of this principle recently, more or less by accident.

We use email marketing quite a lot. Tracking the results is always fascinating and illuminating. So a 100% click-through rate for a download we gave away gave me quite a kick, I must say.

Especially as the open rate for that email was only about 25%!

So yes, over four times as many people clicked the link as actually opened the email, which I've never seen before.

And the lesson? We 'accidentally' took away the risk, by using the words 'just download' in the subject line.

Meaning, not only did people not have to pay, or even sign up with another list, it seems most people realised they didn't even have to open the email. So maybe we appealed to their lazy side, too...

So, several lessons, actually.

1. Taking away the risk dramatically improves response

2. 100% response IS possible

3. Email marketing really does work

4. When you make things really easy and obvious that makes a big difference

5. We really should emphasise how we ALWAYS remove the risk from buying our products, with our no-quibble guarantees!

Until next time, to prosperity - it IS still possible.

Please Support This One

Hello again,

The other day I published an article on my Marketing Manual blog, called 'Have Giveaways Had Their Day?'. You can read it here:http://marketing-manual.blogspot.com/2009/03/have-giveaways-had-their-day.html

I concluded that they haven't, which, assuming I'm right, is just as well.

Today saw the opening of a giveaway event that's very close to my heart, The Gifts For MS Giveaway. Multiple Sclerosis has hit my family twice, with my grandmother and my late father both being affected. Dad had it for almost forty years and was wheelchair-bound for most of the last twenty.

So, when you go to Gifts For MS, pause for a moment before you skip past the special offers and one time deals on your way to all the wonderful free gifts. This time, the profit is going to a very good cause.

I've added a new gift but you'll have to go to the Gifts For MS Giveaway to get it!

Please do, if only to grab all those amazing gifts.

Goal Setting that WORKS

Hello again

The other day I was chatting with a coach from Nightingale Conant and the subject of goal setting came up.

Now, we all 'know' that goal setting works, except that sometimes it doesn't seem to work at all. In our frustration and disappointment, we probably blame ourselves for 'failing' when that happens, instead of asking why setting that goal didn't bring about the desired result.

Of course, we have to take action to make things happen, but even so, sometimes the goal slips further away, rather than getting closer. The harder we try, sometimes, the further away our goal seems to get.

But my friend from Nightingale Conant had an interesting take on this. Without him actually saying as much, the inference I drew was this:

Goals can all too easily seem like dreams. They're unreal, because they haven't been achieved yet, and although Neuro-Linguistic Programming might tell us we have to frame our goals in the present, our subconscious isn't always so easily fooled.

So, a goal is something we can all too easily fantasise about, because it isn't real.

But what did my coach friend say to trigger this line of thought?

It was simple, really. He just asked this:

'In an ideal world, if everything had gone to plan, where would you and your business be NOW?'

The word 'now', coupled with the pain of now not being the perfect place we hoped for, is enough to give real weight to our intentions to get there, and SOON!

Try thinking of your goals like this and see if it helps.

Good luck and please let me know how you get on!

Roy

PS. My goals were sufficiently reset that we gained three new clients within a week and finally relaunched Niche Seminar Secrets for the US market. Add a few personal matters that we resolved and I think you can safely say that little 30-minute chat was very worthwhile!

Your Recipe For Success

Hello again

A nineteenth-century recipe for Jugged Hare began with the immortal line:

'First, catch your hare'.

If you've ever seen a hare run, you'll know that's a bit like saying, 'First, get thousands of visitors to your website'.

That's next to impossible unless you're already a big player online.

So, in order to eat, we might have to settle for something a bit slower-moving than a hare, at least for now.

How about a seated audience?

Given that most website visitors only linger for a few seconds and most direct mail readers don't actually read ... might an hour or so of someone's attention give you a better chance of communicating your benefits to them?

I'd say so. Coaches, trainers and overseas property companies know so. Even Internet marketers know their best audience is one that sits still and listens, with no distraction from the million and one other Internet marketers' emails.

In other words, seminars sell. Why else would Armand Morin, Andrew Reynolds, Sean Roach, Ted Nicholas, Simon Coulson, Mark Anastasi (and a load more besides ) put them on?

After all, if they wanted to be on stage they could join an amateur dramatic group! (Or, in Simon's case, a Coldplay tribute band...)

No, seminars sell. For seventeen dollars you can find out once and for all how well they can sell for you, too.

Go to this special Niche Seminar Secrets Page while you decide!

PS. You get my mentorship when you upgrade. As bonuses go, that's a BONUS. I charge hundreds of dollars a day, normally. You get me for nothing just for upgrading to Niche Seminar Secrets.

A Real Lightbulb Moment

Hello again.

A slight departure today, to discuss something we can often forget - and how it applies to our business as well as our personal lives:

What is a lightbulb made for? In other words, what is its purpose? Why does it exist?

A lightbulb that never lights up serves no purpose at all. It may as well not exist.

But the potential is still there.

Now, it's clear you can ask yourself the same question about your own purpose. And I hope you can come up with a good answer. And if you're not fulfilling your purpose yet, you can be assured the potential to do so is still there within you.

But here's the crux: your purpose is not something you decide on a whim - it's something inside you, something you can really feel you were made for. Like the lightbulb.

Now ask yourself the same question about your business. Is its purpose:

1 To make money?

2 To give employment?

3 To serve its customers?

4 To serve the larger community?

5 To add value?

6 More than one of the above?

7 Something else?

All of those purposes are perfectly fine and respectable, honorable even.

But your business will probably do better once its purpose is clear to you. Just as a lightbulb needs to be recognised for what it is to fulfill its purpose.

Just as you do.

Obama's Big Day

Hello again.

Obama's big day is undoubtedly an historic day for the USA and its people, and, in case our American friends were wondering, for millions if not billions of people worldwide.

Which might make anything else that happens today almost redundant. Sure, a lot of people will be making sure the new president's name features prominently in their emails, blog posts and so on, but their messages will mostly still be drowned out today.

So, why bother posting anything today?

Well, life, and even business, goes on. Special offers don't disappear for a day, to magically reappear tomorrow, the world economy might hold its breath for a moment or two, but the 'crisis' carries on. People still eat, drink, sleep, work, make love, care for their children and so on.

And today's posts will still be there tomorrow, for Google, which never sleeps, to spider, index and rate.

I just banked a commission cheque from Armand Morin's Generator Software, my Niche Seminar Secrets One-Dollar Trial is still open and I'm still available to help, advise and support anyone who asks me.

I've been reading up on economics lately - who hasn't? - and I understand more than I did a few weeks ago. I'm more sure than ever that the free market works, by and large, to improve the lives of those it touches. It doesn't hurt to revisit the arguments, though, to see how it might work better for more people.

Meanwhile, business, as I say, goes on.

I Knew You Were 'Special'

Hello again

I hope you've been watching the latest free Stompernet videos or, if not, that you've downloaded and read their Formula5 report. As they point out in the introduction to the report, we all have different learning styles.

Personally, I prefer reading, with pictures...

And among all the good, sound advice - none of it revolutionary but most of it eye-opening when it's presented the Stompernet way - was one nugget that was worth more to me than all the reminders to follow up, improve by 15% here, test higher prices there, and so on.

It was this: if you're in business, you're different. Just recognising that fact gives you two immediate benefits.

First, you can stop assuming your customer thinks like you. He doesn't, because he's a customer and you're a business owner. So when you offer a solution to his problem, he's grateful. He's far less aware of the fact that you're making money out of him than you are. So supply what he wants and ask for the money.

But the second benefit is even more profound. Because you're different you have permission to behave differently. Some of the rules and attitudes the rest of the world lives by don't apply to you. Like the one that says 'modesty becomes you'. Like the one that says 'no one will like you if you're pushy', or 'we don't talk business at social occasions'.

If you're in business, be in business. Promote your products in your emails, tell anyone who'll listen about the great product or service you offer, be proud of your business and definitely don't be modest about what you can do. That doesn't make you more attractive to most people; it just makes you appear uninteresting and less important than you are. That casual acquaintance might be (or might have been) your next big customer.

Of course, it's much easier to be upbeat and confident and to appear proud of your business if your business is something to be proud of, but it also gets easier if you're in the habit of promoting it at every opportunity.

Be proud to be different and be proud of your success in business.

I'm Anybody's for a Dollar...

Here’s something I’ve observed about Seminar Secrets members:

Most members think it would be quite nice to be able to pocket a six-figure income by learning how to put on their own events. No great surprise there.

Also not surprisingly, most people won’t do it. After all, it’s a new set of skills to learn and something of a journey into the unknown.

Plus, there’s the cost of Niche Seminar Secrets itself, which might be wasted money if you decide it’s not really your thing after all.

That’s why I introduced the one-dollar trial: same content, same bonuses, same guarantee, and yours to try for a month before you pay another cent.

Niche Seminar Secrets will teach you all the skills and guide you on your journey into the unknown.

And here’s what else I’ll offer you:

Me.

You see, I already promise free help and advice to anyone who asks, from here or through either of the Niche Seminar Secrets blogs.

So how is that an incentive for you to invest a whole one dollar?

Well, there is only one of me, so what I can offer is priority. Priority for you as a Niche Seminar Secrets customer means I’ll move heaven and earth to help you first. So, if you need me, the blogs and the other members will have to wait their turn.

And there’s more. When you put on your first event I’ll do my damndest to be there in person, if it’s at all feasible (and we may have to discuss travel costs from the UK...). After all, I’ll have a proven product we can promote from the stage and I’m more than happy to share my profits from the back of the room with you. I’ll be promoting you and your event, as well.

Because, what’s the biggest, most visible product at any event? The event itself! If I really can’t make it I’ll still allow you to sell Niche Seminar Secrets yourself, and still for 50 percent commission.

So, you’ll get your blueprint for success, my hand-holding and advice and even (if possible) me as your first confirmed speaker and an ultra-hot ‘back of the room’ product. By now you should be well and truly in profit!

Anything else you need?

As always, just ask. But you’ll me more certain of a quick reply when you take the one-dollar plunge into Niche Seminar Secrets!

Here's Your Hungry Crowd

Hello again.

Imagine if you could add hundreds, perhaps thousands of the hungriest customers around to your list. Now imagine you can do that for free - just spending a little time and effort.

I showed you how to build a list a few weeks back, with my Come and Get It report.

Well, you can. The Internet continues to grow exponentially. With so much doom and gloom around offline, even more people are going to be joining the online revolution this year. Almost all of them 'newbies' to Internet marketing.

So, if you've been online for even a few weeks or months, you're perfectly placed to help them. In fact, if 'newbie' status is something you remember particularly well, even better, because you'll have an even better idea of their problems than a more experienced marketer might.

A good number of those fresh, new customers will be drawn to the Newbie Training Giveaway - which means you should be there, too, offering free products and adding them, by the hundreds or thousands, to your list.

PS. Of course, you can grab loads of free gifts for yourself, too, when the site officially opens on 7th January. For now, though, they're looking for contributors like you to supply everything a newbie might want - and to grow your list in possibly the easiest way possible, short of actually paying for it!
